Music Therapy

Music therapy is the use of music to accomplish non-musical goals from fostering social connection, to providing expressive emotional outlets, to managing pain without drugs, and so much more.  When we engage in active music making it stimulates every lobe of the brain to work in concert together which makes it a very powerful tool in reaching our loved ones with dementia.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is used with a wide variety of populations across the globe. When it comes to dementia, art can be a way for people to express themselves when language fails. The process of creating art utilizes many areas of the brain simultaneously, making it an ideal activity for those looking to strengthen cognition.

In addition to the cognitive benefits, making art with an art therapist present can create a safe space for people to explore, express, and process difficult emotions. Through The Collective, Jael Weinberg offers individual art therapy sessions, art therapy groups for seniors, and support groups for those connected to dementia.

Education & Engagement

Caring for someone living with dementia can be challenging. You might think the disease is running the show, but what if you considered that as a family member or care partner, your approach can make all the difference? By developing your dementia awareness, knowledge, and practical skills, you can allow people living with dementia to shine!

Erin Staadecker, The Collective's Positive Approach to Care® Certified Independent Trainer, offers in-depth, experiential workshops to develop dementia awareness, including what it is, what it is not, and what happens when someone is living with it; offers new perspectives that shift your care habits to respond, not react; and learn new skills in care partnering to create a safe, successful, and enriching environment. Because dementia changes everything over time, family members and care partners need to change too, in order to be helpful, supportive, and effective.

Workshops qualify for DSHS Approved Continuing Education credits.

Self Care

We know first-hand that being a care partner can be one of life’s most rewarding and most challenging experiences. We can only care for those we love to the extent we care for ourselves, and care partners often skip self care!

This is a quick and easy recipe for frustration and burnout. The Collective emphasizes fundamentals of self care and teaches the research behind it. We'll help you integrate realistic practices into your daily life and find ways to mobilize your care community.

Community Events

Being part of a community is important for all people, and it’s especially important when you are touched by dementia. Whether you want to plan a special educational or engagement event for your family, connect with local resources, or meet other people living with dementia, The Collective will support you in building a strong dementia care community.

Legacy Work

Legacy work is the way we tell our story of who we are, what makes us unique, and how we want to be remembered.

It is an important part of dementia care as our legacy creates connection to ourselves, our loved ones, and our larger communities. Legacy work supports self-efficacy and it allows loved ones to understand our core values and needs.

Pet Therapy

Pet Therapy is a complementary or alternative therapy that is meant to enhance (not replace) other treatments.  It builds on the human-animal bond and has many health benefits, from lowering blood pressure and cortisol levels (the “stress hormone”), to releasing endorphins and reducing stress and anxiety!

A study in Psychogeriatrics found that in long-term elderly care facilities, dog-assisted therapy even helped reduce symptoms of depression through combating isolation and loneliness.

Our Therapy Dog, Rosemary, or more affectionately, “Rosie,” is “Therapy Certified” and to expand her resume, she also has her Canine Good Citizen Certification, a ten-skill training program. She’s a busy working girl in elder and dementia care settings and already enhancing The Creative Dementia Collective’s other expressive therapy sessions!
